Fred and I went birding at a local wetlands refuge. We saw some nice birds, mostly the usual suspects, but I was pleased that this kingfisher posed long enough to get some decent digiscoped shots. I've never gotten any good kingfisher shots. It's good but not great; he was at the far limits of my scope and I was having difficulty telling if it was in focus. Otherwise, we saw red-winged blackbirds, song sparrows, several great blue heron, I think a wood thrush, some turkey vultures and a hawk.

Actually a "he" as the female Belted Kingfisher has a brown brown band as well. Nice picture.

Thanks, Vern. I've edited my post. I couldn't remember which had the rust band and I was too tired to look it up. Interesting--I figured, as in most species, the female would be more drab!
Wow, nice. I've never seen the kingfisher sit long enough to even consider taking a picture.
Usually the male is the one that shows the extra colors so I can see how you would think he is a she.(It's even more confusing if you watch the news talking about men being pregnant).-Really nice photo though! I've never been able to get a Kingfisher photo that I've been happy with.
